Macro

• This week was really all about Donald Trump's so-called Liberation Day where a slew of tariffs were announced. I wrote a recap about that here.
• US nonfarm payrolls increased by 228,000 in March, easily beating expectations for 140,000. However, the unemployment rate unexpectedly ticked up from 4.1% to 4.2%. It has now been within 4% and 4.3% for 11 months straight.
• Private US companies added 155,000 new jobs in March. That was well ahead of the 120,000 forecast and significantly better than the 84,000 created in February. Wages rose 4.6% year over year for people staying in their current jobs, outpacing inflation.
• Layoffs in the US hit 275,240 in March, the most since April and May 2020. More than 216,000 of them were from the federal government.
• Eurozone inflation declined from 2.3% in February to 2.2% in March. The data was in line with expectations.
• South Korea’s Constitutional Court upheld its impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol. He was impeached after imposing martial law on December 3 last year.

Other

• OpenAI closed a $40 billion funding round at a $300 billion valuation, the largest privat tech deal on record. SoftBank led the round with a $30 investment while the remaining $10 billion came from a syndicate of investors. Among private companies, the valuation puts OpenAI behind only SpaceX at $350 billion. Compared with the largest public companies in the world, OpenAI is now tied with companies like Coca-Cola and more valuable than Alibaba, Novo Nordisk, Bank of America, and McDonald’s.
• Tesla delivered just 336,700 vehicles in the first quarter of 2025. Analysts had expected between 360,000 and 370,000. The delivery number was the company’s lowest since 2022 and down 13% from a year ago.
• Newsmax went public and saw a wild first week of trading. It soared more than 700% in its debut on Monday, added another 179% on Tuesday, and then lost 80% in the following three days.
